What is the Difference Between EV Pack and Module

Share:

What is an EV Module and an EV Pack?

In the world of electric vehicles (EVs), "Module" and "Pack" are two key structural units of a battery system, but they refer to different stages of battery integration.

An EV battery module is a subassembly that contains multiple battery cells arranged in a specific configuration (series or parallel) and enclosed in a protective casing. Modules help improve safety, manageability, and scalability of battery systems.

An EV battery pack is the final integrated system that includes several modules along with the Battery Management System (BMS), cooling systems (e.g., water-cooling plates), structural enclosures, wiring harnesses, and safety components. The pack is what gets installed into the EV and powers the vehicle.

In short: Cells → Modules → Pack

Features of EV Battery Modules and Packs

EV Battery Module Features

Composed of 6–24+ cells

Includes structural casing and thermal interface materials

Easier to replace or service

Designed for modularity and heat control

EV Battery Pack Features

Contains multiple modules

Integrated with BMS, cooling, sensors, and protection circuits

Ready-to-use unit for EV installation

Often customized per vehicle platform

Applications of Modules and Packs in EVs

Modules are the building blocks of packs and are used in:

Passenger EVs and e-bikes

Industrial AGVs and forklifts

Battery energy storage systems (BESS)

Packs are the final product and are directly applied in:

Electric cars, trucks, and buses

Hybrid vehicles

High-voltage energy storage containers

The modular structure allows manufacturers to create packs with different voltages, capacities, and shapes by varying the module count and arrangement.

How to Select the Right EV Battery Pack or Module System?

When selecting between a battery module or pack solution, consider the following:

Application Requirements – Choose a pack for end-use deployment; choose modules if you're developing a custom pack.

Thermal Management – Ensure compatibility with air or liquid cooling systems.

Voltage & Capacity Needs – Customize the number and type of modules to meet your performance targets.

Serviceability & Modularity – Consider how easy it is to replace or maintain individual modules.

Integration Capabilities – Confirm pack-level compatibility with the EV’s powertrain, BMS, and space constraints.
